About Dr. Caffery:
Dr. Kelly Caffery is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi where she earned her doctoral degree in Psychology. She earned her master's degree in Biology from the SUNY College at Buffalo and her bachelor's degree from Pennsylvania State University. Originally from Buffalo, NY, she joined the faculty of Indian River State College in 2014.
Prior to IRSC, Dr. Caffery was an Instructor of Biology and Psychology at William Carey University and taught courses there at the undergraduate and graduate level. In addition, she has taught courses at the University of Southern Mississippi and SUNY College at Buffalo. Dr. Caffery has experience teaching Anatomy and Physiology, Animal Behavior, Behavioral Neuroscience, Biology, Comparative Anatomy, Counseling Psychology, Educational Psychology, Genetics, History and Systems of Psychology, Human Development, Introduction to Psychology, Mammalogy, and Statistics. At IRSC, she predominately teaches Human Development and Introduction to Psychology.
Dr. Caffery's research focuses on animal behavior and she is particularly interested in studying social behavior, cognition, learning, and enrichment for captive animals. She has experience working with marine mammals, large felids, canines, and primates. Prior to her professional career in academia, Dr. Caffery worked as a dog trainer and zoo keeper. Her experience in those positions fostered her passion for studying animal behavior and helping animals in captivity.
Although Dr. Caffery enjoys her work with animals, she believes that her chosen vocation of teaching is the most rewarding. As a professor, Dr. Caffery strives to create a positive learning environment for her students by connecting with them on a more personal level and encouraging classroom interaction and discussion. She is committed to facilitating personal and academic growth in her students and hopes to inspire a lifelong passion for learning.
